The physical competitions are which are pursued to achieve the objectives and the challenges they bring. They are an integral part of all cultures, past and present. However, every cultural tradition has its unique interpretation of sport. The most effective descriptions are the ones which define the relation between sports and games, play and competitions. "Play," wrote the German theorist Carl Diem, "is purposeless activity, for its own sake, the opposite of work." Human beings are obligated to work for a reason and engage in play because they desire to. Play is autotelic, that is, it is a goal-driven activity. It's voluntary and not coerced. Children who aren't able to comply with the demands of their teachers or parents to play the soccer game (soccer) are not actually involved in the sport. Also, professional athletes should not be when their sole motive is to earn a salary. In real life in the real world motivations can be multi-faceted and sometimes difficult to discern. An unambiguous definition is still an essential element to making practical judgments regarding what is and isn't an instance of play.
There are two types of games. The first is free and free of constraints. Examples abound. A child spots an unflattened stone, picks the stone up, then launches it into the pond's waters. A grown-up realizes laughing that he's made an unintentional joke. Both actions are unplanned, and both are somewhat free of constraints. The second kind of game is controlled. There are rules for determining what actions are legal and which ones aren't. The rules convert spontaneous playing into games, and could be described as controlled or rule-bound games. Leapfrogs, chess "playing house," and basketball are all games. Some of them have very simple rules, while others are controlled by a more complicated set of rules. In reality, the rules books for games like basketball can be hundreds of pages.
As games, basketball and chess are clearly different from playing leapfrog or playing in the house. The two games that are competitive, while the other two aren't. You can be crowned the winner of a basketball match however it doesn't make sense to inquire who won a leapfrog game. In the same way, chess and basketball are both games.
The final distinction is that contests are divided into two categories one: ones that require the minimum level of physical ability as well as those that don't. Shuffleboard is an excellent example of the former. The board game Scrabble and Monopoly can be used to illustrate the second. It should be recognized that even most basic sports, like weightlifting, require some degree of concentration, while other sports, like baseball, require a substantial amount of mental concentration.
